This is my visual commentary from the Come and See series.
Read What Does it Mean to be Born Again?
What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
(John 3:6)
The Lectionary takes us away from Matthew for the rest of Lent and turns our attention to four stories in the Gospel of John where Jesus interacts with individuals. The Gospel this week is a conversation Jesus has with a religious leader named Nicodemus. The first and second readings frame the Gospel with the story of God’s promise to Abraham in Genesis. It was Abraham’s faith—not his circumcision or the-yet-to-be-written Law of Moses—that was reckoned to him as righteousness.
This week we meet Nicodemus. He was a Pharisee, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus, in Jerusalem, at night. He seemed genuinely intrigued by Jesus and had lots of questions. This passage is chock full of rich theological themes and contains one of the most famous verses in the Bible—John 3:16. The preacher’s challenge is more about what to leave out than what to say.
Here is one thing to keep in mind. John likes to use geography as part of the story and likes to tell stories in pairs: abundance in Galilee, scarcity in Jerusalem. Nicodemus meets Jesus in Jerusalem in the darkness. Next week Jesus meets a Samaritan woman by a well in the middle of the day. It may be helpful to keep these two stories in play both weeks. This chart might be helpful.

The Lenten Journey in the Narrative Lectionary this year takes us to the events of the Passion. It is important to note that we skip the Triumphal Entry and save it for Palm Sunday. This is one of the few times that the NL forsakes the narrative for the liturgical calendar. Remind your congregation that the crowd has already shouted, “Hosanna!” when Jesus comes to this scene. This week we come to the upper room on the night that Jesus was betrayed. He washes his disciples’ feet and gives them “a new command, to love one another.”
This story is traditionally read and observed on Maundy Thursday during Holy Week. Not everyone attends that service, so this may be an opportunity to teach this story to a new crowd. When we look ahead to the text chosen for Maundy Thursday we see that it skips this story and goes straight to the crucifixion.
The preacher has the opportunity, perhaps, to focus on the love commandment this week, then return to the foot washing aspects and the betrayal on Maundy Thursday.
