Visual Resources for the Lectionaries

This post offers visual resources for the Revised Common Lectionary and the Narrative Lectionary for September 24, 2023. The RCL recounts the story of how God provided manna for the grumbling Israelites in Exodus 16:2-15. It also begins a mini series in Philippians this week. The Gospel is Matthew 20:1-16 where Jesus tells the parable of the generous manager and the field workers. The NL tells the story of Jacob’s fear of seeing Esau again in Genesis 32:9-30.

The slide show above comes from a sermon I did back in 2013. I had just read the book After Heaven by Robert Wuthnow and it influenced my interpretation of Manna in Exodus. You can read the sermon HERE.

The image below is my visual summary of Wuthnow’s argument. I connected the practice of presence to manna.

Narrative Lectionary

The NL takes us to the story of Jacob as he is about to meet Esau across the Jabbok river in Genesis 32:9-30. The slide show below was created for the next part of the story, but it does have some images that help for context. This is a unique slide deck for me, since I used found images, rather than create them myself.

The Gospel is Mark 14:32-36. Jesus asks God to spare him from his suffering.

The Year of Mark Begins. Plan your studies now.
