Visual Resources for the Lectionaries
This post offers visual resources for the Revised Common Lectionary and the Narrative Lectionary for December 10, 2023. This is the second week of Advent. We light the candle of PEACE. This is also a rare convergence where both lectionaries have the same OT reading and Gospel text. This week we connect Isaiah 40 to the ministry of John the Baptist in the Gospel of Mark.

Isaiah 40 and John the Baptist
The above timeline puts Isaiah 40:1-11 in the context of the Babylonian Empire.
The three images below come from a study I did when preaching from Luke’s account. I think the images are helpful to visualize the message of Isaiah 40 in whatever context you are preaching. Even though Mark does not include the leveling of the ground piece, it is still implied by the reference to Isaiah 40. Luke adds Isaiah 52:10 to the text from chapter 40. Feel free to right click and save these images for your presentation.
