Food for Thought
The people of Israel were supposed to be a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. Their relationship with the LORD God was supposed to shine a light to all the nations. That is what we learn from Exodus 19. It seems that the nation never really lived up to that high calling. And yet, perhaps they did.
The Israelites were human, like all of us. They wrestled with all the temptations of power, lust, fear, etc. They more often strayed from the LORD than obeyed the Torah. And yet, through it all, God remains faithful.
Jesus shows up and sees the people of Israel as lost sheep. He doesn’t condemn them. He loves them and has compassion on them. He sends his disciples to gather them in. He redeems them with his own life. The Apostle Paul tells us that we are at peace with God through Jesus Christ.
Perhaps this relationship between God and the Israelites is the beacon of light for the nations. It is like the story in Genesis when Abraham and Sarah entertain strangers. We never know when God is in our midst. We sometimes do the right thing, and we sometimes laugh in the face of God. Through it all, God seeks to redeem and restore us.
May we respond like the Psalmist and give thanks to the LORD our God, who has made us and redeemed us. May we overflow this love to all the world that all the lost sheep may know the shepherd and be well fed.

Ruth 3:1-18

Food for Thought
We continue in the story of Ruth this week. Naomi is worried for Ruth’s future security. She invokes the Levirite law that allows a male relative to take a widow as his wife in order to provide a child for her to keep the blood line going and to provide for her in her old age. The Hebrew word is goel. Ruth asked Boaz to be her goel, her kinsmen-redeemer. Boaz is flattered, but knows that there is a younger man who could also do it. He demonstrates generosity and offers to give Ruth another, more viable option. Stay tuned to see what happens next week.
The theme of kinsmen-redeemer is a metaphor often used in scripture to describe God’s love for us. God takes us in and offers us hope and life.
