John 14, 15, 16, 17
In John 14-17 Jesus comforts his disciples on the night he will be arrested, tried, and then crucified. He tells them that he is going to the Father and will send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to teach, guide and protect them when he is gone.
John 13:1-38
Jesus washes his disciples’ feet and sets and example of servant leadership. Judas leaves dinner to betray Jesus. The scene ends with Jesus giving one command: to love one another. Peter declares that he would defend Jesus to the death, but Jesus predicts he will deny him three times.
John 12:1-26
John 11:1-57
In John 11 Jesus consoles Mary by testifying, “I am the resurrection and the life,” just before he weeps for his friend, and her brother, Lazarus who has died. Then, he shouts, “Lazarus, come forth!” and the dead man emerges from the tomb.
John 9:35-10:42
In John 9:35-10:42 Jesus reconnects with the man he healed from blindness in the previous scene. He uses his conversation with this man to indict the religious leaders for being blind, false leaders and imposter shepherds. Jesus claims to be the Good Shepherd who know the sheep and the sheep know him. He would lay his life down for the sheep.
John 9:1-34
In John 9:1-34 Jesus heals a man who was born blind. This sends the crowd and the religious leaders of Jerusalem into a big conversation. The man is interrogated by the council. All he can do is testify, “Once I was blind, now I see.” The leaders drive him out as a sinner.
John 8:1-59
In John 8:1-59 Jesus frees a woman caught in adultery. He also claims to be the light of the world. This declaration leads to a long dialogue that ends with the leaders trying to stone him to death. He escapes to teach another day.
John 7:1-52
In John 7:1-52 Jesus proclaims that he offers living water. This happens in the Temple during the Feast of Tabernacles. This is an intentional move on John’s part to connect Jesus’ identity and ministry to the practices and meaning of the Feast. This was the time when Israelites celebrated God’s provision as they wandered in the wilderness in the story of Exodus.
John 6:1-71
Jesus feeds 5,000 people and claims to be the Bread of Life.
