The church in Colossae was one of the “grandchildren” churches that sprang out of Paul’s ministry in the hall of Tyrannus. Epaphras started the church after he had been instructed by Paul. While Paul was in prison, he received word that Epaphras’ church was being infected by false teaching regarding the identity of Christ. In response, Paul wrote this letter that explained the supremacy of Christ over all things. Everything the believer needs can be found in submission and obedience to the head of the body, the supreme ruler, Jesus. Paul is encouraging the church to grow in their relationship with Christ and to become more like Him.
