Gospel Reading – Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21

This collection of texts allows us to focus on the themes of repentance, fasting, and forgiveness. Joel urges the nation to cry out to God. Don’t just go through the motions of fasting. Rend your heart. Return to the Lord. Psalm 51 is David’s cry to God for forgiveness after he rapes Bathsheba and covers it up by having her husband killed. Paul tells the Corinthians that Jesus became sin on the cross so that we might become righteousness. Jesus tells the crowd on the mountain that they should not do their acts of piety as an outward performance to gain the praise of people. Rather, they should go to the secret place where it is a matter of the heart and relationship with God.
It is my opinion that the Gospel text should be extended to the end of the section at 6:34. This would include Jesus’ indictment that we cannot serve both God and money simultaneously. The ultimate conclusion of this section is that the disciple of Jesus is called to not worry about tomorrow. Ash Wednesday is an opportunity for us to think about our priorities and lay up our treasures in the things/people that will last.
