Narrative Lectionary Resources

1 Samuel 3:1-21

The challenge for the NL preacher is to move from the story of manna in Exodus 16 last week to the calling of Samuel in 1 Samuel 3. You must somehow summarize Mt. Sinai, the Law, the wanderings in Numbers, the division of the land in Joshua, and the cycle of the judges.

Moses led the people to Mt. Sinai where they received the Law from God. They wandered through the wilderness for 40 years before they reached the east side of the Jordan River.

Joshua was Moses’ apprentice. He took over leadership at the end of Deuternonomy. The book of Joshua tells the story of how the people of Israel moved into the Promised Land of Canaan, fought the various Canaanite kings, and settled in the land as a federation of twelve tribes.

The Tabernacle of God was camped in Shiloh.

The twelve tribes attempted to follow God by keeping the Law of Moses. There were no kings. When the people fell into the worship of the Canaanite gods and became enslaved by Canaanite tribes, God raised up a judge/leader to deliver them. This cycle lasted for 300 years.
