Gospel Reading – John 4:5-42

from this sermon in 2018

We come to the third week of our Lenten journey. Here we stop at a well in Samaria where Jesus has a conversation with a woman. This story, in combination with all the readings, teases out many themes. The First Reading teases out the theme of living water for complaining people. Jesus tells the woman that he can offer her living water. Moses strikes the rock at Horeb and it gushes a spring of water. The Psalm teases out the theme of worship. The woman raises a theologically divisive question regarding where the proper worship of God should take place. Jesus tells her that place doesn’t matter as much as worshipping God in Spirit and Truth. The Psalm speaks of proper worship in contrast with complaining and divisive hearts. The Second Reading teases out the theme of reconciliation as Paul reminds the Jews and Gentiles in Rome that they have been reconciled through the cross of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. The Samaritan woman is reminded by Jesus that God loves the Samaritans as well as the Jews. He is the Messiah, the savior of the whole world.

We can also treat this story as part two of a two part story that contrasts the conversation between Nicodemus last week in Jerusalem with the conversation this week between Jesus and a Samaritan woman. Jesus offers this woman living water that brings her life, healing, and restoration to her community. I hope my commentary “A Man in the Dark, A Woman in the Light” will be helpful for you.

John 18:12-27

Peter's Denial

Peter's Denial from Come and See
The Narrative Lectionary affords us the opportunity to look more closely at the stories of Jesus’ final week. These stories are usually smashed into the confines of Holy Week.

Still, some key parts of the story are skipped. Last week we were in the upper room with Jesus and his disciples. He washes there feet in chapter 13. Then John spends four chapters (14-17) recording the exchange between Jesus and the disciples that is often called The Upper Room Discourse. These chapters, in my opinion, contain the core teaching of the Gospel according to John. They are not not narrative, thus they are skipped in the NL.

Then, we skip the beginning of chapter 18 where Jesus is arrested in the garden. You might want to walk through these events to set up the scene for this week.

Now, Jesus is taken before the high priest to be questioned. While he is being interrogated, Peter is in the courtyard, warming himself by the fire amongst a group of people. He is recognized by the crowd. In fear, he denies that he knows Jesus three times. The rooster crows. Peter seems lost. The story grows darker.

One question we could ask ourselves in this story is, “would I have said, ‘yes, I am his disciple’ in that moment?” How often do we let fear and self-protection impede our witness for Christ?
