The Heart | Lent 5 | Visual Resources for Both Lectionaries on March 17, 2024
Visual Resources for the Lectionaries
This post offers visual resources for the Revised Common Lectionary and the Narrative Lectionary for the fifth week of Lent, March 17, 2024. Jeremiah declares that God will write the covenant on the hearts of the people and know them personally. David cries out for a clean heart. Hebrews says that Jesus is a priest in the order of Melchizedek. Jesus shows his heart and the heart of God to the people. The NL takes us to Jesus’ prediction of the destruction of the Temple and his warning to “keep awake.”

Narrative Lectionary
The reading this week is Mark 13:1-8, 24-37. In this text Jesus discusses the end of the age with his disciples. The disciples had been marveling at how beautiful the Temple is and Jesus warns them that the whole thing will come tumbling down soon. This section marks the end of Jesus’ confrontation with and critique of the Temple system in Jerusalem. We can find both warning and comfort in this story. The Kin-dom of God is not a building or ritualistic system. It is the way of love, justice, and peace in the world.

Compare this to Matthew 24-25 and Luke 19-21.
