Jesus is the gate and the good shepherd
The texts this week evoke a sense of awe and wonder in me. It is obvious in the Acts reading. 3,000 people were added to the numbers of disciples on the day of Pentecost. Acts 2:42-47 paints an idyllic portrait of what the church could and should look like. People are living together in harmony and mutual flourishing. Their testimony is so strong that everyone around them stood in awe. Oh that it were true of us.

The rest of the texts focus on the true awe and wonder. They focus on the source of the church’s ability to live in harmony. Peter’s and John’s writings focus on the fact that Jesus suffered for us. Not only did he suffer, but he willingly took on the scorn and shame of Empire. Then, even more awesomely, he didn’t retaliate. He absorbed the violence and forgave his persecutors. In so doing he set the world free. He created a safe haven for the sheep. He became the gate through which we can enter into abundant life. He was not like the imposter shepherds of his day. He gave his life for the sheep. Peter encourages us to follow in his footsteps.

This is truly awesome and fills me with wonder.

Narrative Lectionary Resources

Acts 16:16-34

The Narrative Lectionary skips a lot this week in the book of Acts. Last week we saw the conversion of Saul on the Road to Damascus in chapter 9. This week we jump all the way to chapter 16 where Paul (the Saul that we saw last week, name switched) and Silas are arrested in a Roman colony in Macedonia called Philippi. The challenge for the NL preacher will be knowing how to fill in the gaps: Saul goes away, Peter encounters Cornelius, the Spirit comes on Antioch, they send for Saul, they send Saul and Barnabus on a mission, they start calling Saul Paul, Paul spreads the message of Jesus in the region of Galatia, the church has a council in Jerusalem and deem it not necessary for Gentiles to be circumcised, Paul and Barnabas break up, Paul and Silas get called to Macedonia, they meet Lydia in Philippi and the church is started in her house. Now we are ready to hear the story of Paul and Silas in Philippi. (this is a good opportunity to quickly walk through the story with the Acts Mega Pack slides)

Paul excorcises the python spirit from a young slave girl and her owners get angry. She made money for them through fortune telling, and now their revenue is gone. The slave owners drag Paul and Silas to court and have them beaten and thrown in jail. Paul and Silas praise God in prison, an earthquake busts them out, they don’t run away, and their faithfulness bears witness to the jailer and leads his whole household to Christ.

That’s an amazing story!
