Watching in Hope | Visual Resources for Advent 1 and Both Lectionaries
This post offers visual resources for the week of November 27, 2022 in the Revised Common Lectionary and the Narrative Lectionary. It is the first Sunday of Advent and we light the candle of hope. Jesus warns his disciples of the coming destruction of Jerusalem and tells them to watch and be ready (RCL) and the prophet Habakkuk warns Jerusalem of the coming destruction from the Babylonian Empire (NL).
This week we light the first Advent Candle. You can download this virtual advent wreath for FREE and use it on your own website, social media platforms, and in worship. Enjoy!
Revised Common Lectionary | Matthew 24:36-44 | Jesus Warns of Coming Destruction
This week we officially begin our year in Matthew. The RCL chooses to begin with the end as Jesus sits on the Mount of Olives, during his final week, and warns his disciples of the coming destruction of Jerusalem. He tells them to watch and be ready. It breaks his heart to tell them this, but the heart of the city is too hard and the war with Rome is inevitable.

Narrative Lectionary | Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:2-4; 3:[3b-6] 17-19 | The Prophet Habakkuk Warns Jerusalem of Coming Destruction
This week the Narrative Lectionary takes us to the prophet Habbukuk. We don’t know exactly when he preached, but the message itself gives us some clues. Assyria has already been defeated by the Babylonians, so we know that the Kingdom of Israel has already been destroyed in 721. He is predicting that the Babylonians will destroy Jerusalem, so he must have been preaching before King Jehoiachin in 597.
The following images are designed to help you frame the context of the story. Explore 2 Kings for even more resources.
This is a fitting text for Advent 1 as we watch in hope. Habukkuk uses the metaphor of a watch tower and warns the people of Jerusalem to watch and wait on the the Lord.
Join me every Monday at 4:00pm Central Time for a live Bible study on Zoom.
